MEDWeek Minority Enterprise Development Week

Small Business Academy Consortium

MBDA Executive Director’s Award

The Small Business Academy was formed in 2009 by nine San Antonio governmental organizations to provide business skills assistance to small and minority-owned vendors. Participating members are the Alamo Colleges, BexarMet Water District, Edwards Aquifer Authority, San Antonio Housing Authority, San Antonio River Authority, San Antonio Water System, University Health System, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and VIA Metropolitan Transit Authority.

In 2011, the Small Business Academy selected 20 small, minority, women, veteran, or disabled individual business enterprises, disadvantaged business enterprises and/or historically underutilized businesses to participate in this training program. Classes focused on how to sharpen business development skills as well as provided companies with resources needed to enhance their competitive edge.

During the nine-week training program, the Small Business Academy provided 18 hours of instruction through workshops and hands-on seminars. Participants of the Small Business Academy had an opportunity to learn how to do business with each of the consortium members as well as local trade associations.
